Nominations Due April 21 for Dearborn Public Schools Impact Award To Recognize Non-Teaching Staff

-Nominations from students and parents welcome to celebrate non-teaching staff members

Children become successful thanks to their own talents and initiative, but critical to getting them on

the right track are the combined efforts of many adults, at home and in school.

Students and parents have the opportunity to recognize Dearborn Public Schools staff members,

besides teachers, who make outstanding contributions to helping students, enhancing the classroom

environment or providing excellent customer service in other roles.

Nominations are welcome for the Impact award, introduced in 2015 by the Dearborn Public Schools.

The deadline for submitting nominations is noon on April 21, 2017.

Just as the Teacher of Year award celebrates the classroom teachers, the Impact Award recognizes all

other (non-teaching) staff members who demonstrate the District’s Core Values. Nominees should be

consistently professional, personable and polite as they work with students, contribute to the

classroom environment, and provide overall customer service as they work to create a better Dearborn

Public Schools.

District employees who are eligible for the Impact Award include full or part time staff members

employed with the Dearborn Public Schools for more than three years.

Examples of staff members who are eligible include Principals, Parapros, Custodians, Bus Drivers,

Food Service Staff, Social Workers, Skilled Trades, Computer Technicians, or anyone who is not a

classroom teacher but works for the Dearborn Public Schools.

Previous nominees may be nominated, however previous Impact Award winners may not win again.

Nomination forms with a complete list of qualifications can be found and completed online at Printed nomination forms are available in all school offices and the

District’s Administration Office, 18700 Audette, Dearborn 48124.

Four winners will be announced on May 16 at the annual Green Tie Event, sponsored by the Dearborn

Education Foundation. Winners will receive $500 and an engraved award.

Parent Survey for District Wellness Policy

Parent Survey for District Wellness Policy

In accordance with the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, each local educational agency that participates in the National School Lunch Program or other federal Child Nutrition programs is required by federal law to establish a local school wellness policy for all schools under its jurisdiction. New provisions strengthen the requirements on public involvement, transparency, implementation, and evaluation among other topics. A reformed wellness policy is due June 30, 2017.
Dearborn Public Schools is currently working to reform its current district-wide wellness policy to meet these new requirements. However, in order for the implementation of this policy to be successful, it is important that the parents and guardians of Dearborn Public School students provide feedback. Please use the survey below to express your perception of wellness within Dearborn Public Schools and your own household, along with any other opportunities Dearborn Public Schools may have to improve student wellness practices.

Time to Nominate your Favorite Teacher for Teacher of the Year!!!!

Time To Nominate Your Favorite Teacher!
It’s time for students to nominate their favorite Dearborn Public Schools teacher for the 2017 Alberta Muirhead Teacher of the Year Award, sponsored by the Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce, and presented by LaFontaine Automotive Group. The deadline for submitting applications is Thursday, April 6, 2017.
Printed nomination forms may be picked up at any Dearborn public school and the district’s Administration Office, 18700 Audette. They can be dropped off or mailed to the Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce, 22100 Michigan Avenue, Dearborn, MI 48124, or faxed to (313) 584-9818. Adults may assist students in completing nominations when necessary, but no more than two teachers can be nominated per student.

Students may nominate new or veteran teachers whom they feel have made outstanding contributions to the teaching profession. Pre-K through second grade students are asked to describe how their teacher makes learning fun. Students in this category can include a nice drawing, if they wish, but it will not be part of the selection process. Third through fifth grade students will need to describe how their teacher has created a classroom where learning is positive and fun. Middle school students (grades 6-8) are asked to explain how their teacher connects classroom learning with everyday life. Students in high school must describe how their teacher is preparing them to be successful beyond high school.

“Nominating a teacher for this award is an outstanding way for students to show their teachers how much they appreciate and value the job they are doing in the classroom and the positive impact they have on their life. We have so many excellent teachers who are deserving of this recognition I hope all of our students will take a few moments to nominate their favorite teacher”, commented Dearborn Public Schools Superintendent Glenn Maleyko.

Applications will be assessed on quality of the nomination, not on the number received. Award judges are members of the Dearborn Chamber Education Committee and are not provided with the teachers’ names. One winner from each category will be announced at a special ceremony being held at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center on May 24, 2017 beginning at 4:15 p.m.

Teachers selected to receive the Teacher of Year Award are being recognized as positive role models who consistently provide unique, productive, positive classroom experiences. Teachers selected receive a $1,000 cash prize, a glass award commemorating their achievement, and most importantly will be part of a select group of Dearborn teachers who have been recognized by the community for their dedication and passion for teaching.

“I want to thank the Chamber of Commerce and all the sponsors for once again hosting this event,” Maleyko added. “Our district is very fortunate to have so many great community partners.”

STEM Applications Ready To Be Plucked

– Current 5th grade students who are interested in attending Dearborn’s STEM Middle School this fall must apply by March 17.

The Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Middle School (STEM) is one of the newest programs in the District and another example of the choices parents have when deciding upon the type of learning experiences they want for their children while attending the Dearborn Public Schools.

In social media terms the school is really ‘trending” upwards and making a big impact on student learning. The school earned a spot on the State of Michigan’s list of Reward Schools ranking in the top 15 out of the 219 schools making the list. In order to get this designation, a school must either be ranked in the top 5% academically, have shown significant academic progress or have performed better than predicted.

“We strive to include a variety of “hands-on,” interactive lessons in our daily classroom learning, all with the goal of exposing our students to everything STEM,” commented STEM Middle School Principal Ms. Julia Maconochie.

Students are quickly making enrollment in the school one of the most sought after learning opportunities in the District. 1 Online applications are now being accepted from current 5th grade students who would like to attend the STEM Middle School.

Parents and students interested in applying for the fall, 2017 semester can apply online at Applications from current 5th grade students must be submitted online by March 17, 2017. Information will also be sent home with fifth grade students currently attending Dearborn Public Schools.

Dearborn’s STEM school is located at The Heights Campus on Ann Arbor Trail.
